PHOTOGRAPHIC SEQUENCE RESEARCH

PHOTOGRAPHIC SEQUENCE RESEARCH

Of all the photographic sequences I know of, I have always loved looking at Eadweard Muybridge’s early photographs (collotypes) of animals and people in motion. When I was an undergraduate art student, I used some of his photographic sequences as the basis for video art pieces. I recorded the stills onto video tape (using a rostrum camera) and then animated them, adding text and music to create weird and wonderful video 'shorts'. Figure 1 shows an example of Muybridge's approach to analysing motion through stills photography.
