Final Major Project — Artist 2 (John Smith)

John Smith (Figure 1) is a British film and video artist. For many years he has worked with video and multi-screen projections, creating moving image works that playfully subvert the genre of the film documentary. He reworks and transforms reality, 'exploring and exposing the language and manipulative power of cinema’ (Frieze, 2010).  Fig 1. John Smith Fig 2. Hackney Marshes – November 4th 1977 (Smith, 1977) Many of his films use a highly personal eye to observe the human environment, re-examining and re-positioning our architecture and landscape. Smith asks questions of 'the perceived boundaries between documentary and fiction, representation and abstraction' (Smith, 2018).  Fig. 3 The Girl Chewing Gum (Smith, 1976) References Frieze (2010) Smith, J.
